Just a Vegan Sausage roll? Or a new era for the world!?

A century ago, meats were thought to be a luxury. Then factory chicken farming was introduced in the early 1950s. What was once a rare & sought-after food became a norm in rich & poor homes alike. This is where the problems started...

Quality of meat & the treatment of animals dropped significantly to deal with the demand. Animals are treated very poorly even for the demands of Milk, Cheese & eggs. This is simply bad unnecessary practice. Environmental scientists all agree that the single BEST thing you can do for the WORLD is to reduce or eliminate meat from your diet.

The launch comes after 20,000 people signed a petition calling on Greggs to produce a vegan version of its bestselling item. Consumer pressure can work! “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian & vegan products,”

Twitter has reported furious customers who have complained that their branch has SOLD OUT of vegan rolls too quickly!

I haven't been to Greggs for years, its stogy, not cheap, unhealthy food. But today I went in hoping for a light in the perspex meat window. Not that anything from Greggs is healthy, far from it.

VERDICT - Pleasantly surprised, it tastes the same a a meat sausage roll but an animal hasn't had to die.

"Honestly - I wouldn't be able to tell the difference." Is the general verdict.

1/3 of UK consumers say they have deliberately reduced the amount of meat they eat or removed it from their diet. 1/8 Britons are now vegetarian or vegan. 21% say they are flexitarian – that is to say they have a largely vegetable-based diet, occasionally with meat.

Meat seems dominate options in restaurants, supermarkets, fast food places, I like the texture, some flavours too, but meat free substitutes are so good now I think most people would galdy swap to the alternative, rather than having cheap, plastic tasting meat thrown into everything. I sure would!

If you've not got the appetite for meat-free alternatives, least we can all delight in it pissing off Piers Morgan who hates the idea, so surely it's a good thing. :-)

Anything vegetarian or dare I say it VEGAN, seems to create a lot of angry reaction like its insulting them!? Thankfully Greggs has a good team on the job! lol

The prejudice against Vegans is quite astonishing.. Matt Ball of One Step for Animals wrote “vegans are viewed more negatively than atheists, immigrants, homosexuals, and asexuals,” citing a recent study . “The only group viewed more negatively than vegans were drug addicts,” He also cited another analysis that found that “labeling a product ‘vegan’ causes its sales to drop by 70%.

Why do some people feel so offended?!

  1. Vegans make people feel guilty? People tend to interpret someone’s choice not to eat meat as condemnation of their own choices.

  2. Some Vegans a too preachy and don't let people choose, forcing their beliefs on someone else!

  3. Meat eaters believe it is essential to their health!

  4. Eating meat has become so 'normal' it would feel strange not to!?

  5. Vegan's have a stereotype of being too politically correct and righteous.

Marco Lambertini, director of WWF “We can no longer ignore the impact of current unsustainable production models & wasteful lifestyles.

A UK study released just last week found that plant-based diets can improve mental well-being & quality of life, decrease risk of diabetes, and help with weight loss. Eating less meat & dairy also play a huge role in reducing the impact of climate change.

Advantages of a non-meat diet are -

  1. Fighting Disease - When done right, vegetarian diets are naturally low in saturated fats, and cholesterol.

  2. Lean Figure - Vegetarians typically weigh less with foods fewer in calories & toxic food.

  3. Live Longer - Vegetarians have been found to enjoy longer & healthier lives.

  4. The biggest cause of wildlife losses is the destruction of natural habitats, much of it to create farmland, to feed animals, so we can eat meat.

  5. Avoiding meat & dairy is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth. Giving up beef will have more of an impact than giving up driving.

  6. World hunger could be eradicated if we gave the food to humans instead of livestock to get fat.

  7. May Improve Mood - Arachidonic acid is a substance that usually comes from dietary animal sources and, no surprise, vegetarian diets are not high in arachidonic acid.

Have I read too much into the launch of a vegan sausage roll? Perhaps. As the Gregg’s official Twitter responded to an angry tweet yesterday: “It’s a vegan sausage roll Damon.” But in a small way it marks a significant step towards changing the daily routine of eating meat & the awful consequences it has on your body, mind, the world & animals. Fast food restaurants have a lot to learn!?

My other blog posts have highlighted the dreadful Food Standards we have in this country, consumer pressure can make a difference, just as in this case.

Vegan or otherwise, surely this is something to celebrate. Here’s to 2019, a 'fresh' start for all. :-)

We are the first generation to know we are destroying our planet & the last one that can do anything about it.”
